An ad hoc committee continued its discussion Wednesday about how to bring a long-term drug treatment facility to Bibb County.
The committee, which includes Commissioners Elmo Richardson and Lonzy Edwards, talked about the possibility of a public/private partnership and gathering together local agencies that offer similar services. That gathering would develop ideas on the matter.
The biggest question is how such a facility would be maintained - and where the money would come from - once it's established, Richardson said.
Cost estimates, which are several years old, show the county would spend nearly $900,000 to open such a facility and about $750,000 to operate it annually. Commissioners speculated that cost could rise to nearly $1 million a year.
"This could get really expensive," Edwards said. "No question about it."
He pointed out that the county already is putting money into drug treatment through the jail, where a number of inmates are incarcerated because of drug-related issues.
"The alternative is expensive, too," Edwards said of the jail. "We're in the business whether we want to be or not."
